The Amazon river is the river that the Amazon Rainforest is named after. It is not only the widest river in the world, but also the second longest river in the world. It measures up to 4080 miles (approx. 6000km) long and 5 miles wide , running through the Peruvian Andes, Brazil and to the Atlantic ocean.
Even though this river is shorter than the longest river in the world, it contains more water than the Nile (longest river), the Mississippi and the Yangtze (3rd longest river) combined!
This river in fact pours around 60 million gallons of water into the Atlantic ocean each second. Due to the large amount of water poured into it, the ocean's water dilutes the salt water for as much as 100 miles offshore.
